At our 22-acre site along the Ebbw River, Axiom is proud of its thriving forest ecosystem and green spaces, where recent sustainability initiatives have created a welcoming habitat for local wildlife.
Our facility is home to 4 hives with over 300,000 bees. Constructed from polystyrene, these hives help regulate the bees’ temperature throughout the seasons, keeping them cool in the summer and warm during the winter. The honey produced has even become a favourite in our canteen.
A true haven for pollinators, our meadow is filled with a variety of wildflowers, earning the nickname "bee heaven" from the local beekeeper. Beyond the meadow, we have a thriving woodland with over 10,000 trees and bug hotels created from repurposed wood pallets, providing shelter and nesting sites for a variety of wildlife.
With bird boxes scattered around the site, they attract species including blue tits, chaffinches and red kites. Our latest addition includes bat boxes, which will become home to species including pipistrelle bats.
Robert Franklin, the Safety Officer overseeing Axiom's sustainability efforts, commented: “Axiom has always been committed to enhancing sustainability within our manufacturing processes, whether it's through returnable packaging, recycling COSHH, or installing solar panels. In recent years, we've taken great steps to improve sustainability across our entire facility grounds by creating wildlife-friendly spaces, such as bird and bat boxes, bug hotels, and bee hives.
“Now, more than ever, it’s important to support our local wildlife. In the UK, over half of our wild species—plants, insects, birds, and mammals—are declining. Simple actions like installing bird boxes or allowing growth for wildflowers can make a significant impact, giving nature a better chance to thrive and leaving a healthier planet for future generations.
“As a keen environmentalist and birdwatcher, it’s a great feeling coming to work knowing that we’re making a difference for local wildlife.”
