As part of Axiom’s mission to educate and inform the next generation of engineering talents, on 27th June 2024, a team from Axiom visited Coleg y Cymoedd, educating students aged 14-16 about engineering possibilities within PCBA manufacturing.
The Civic Mission event organised by Cardiff University’s ‘Physics Mentoring Project’ consisted of five of Wales’ leading science and engineering companies, running workshops to engage and inspire young students.
Providing insight into what Axiom is all about, the workshop consisted of a presentation introducing the business and our apprentices, followed by a reverse engineering group activity using Lego; The ‘creator’ teams had to disassemble a ready-made model providing clear step by step instructions, from which the ‘build’ team then had to follow to replicate the original model. This successful activity aimed to teach quality, efficiency, communication, and teamwork.
The team delivering the workshops were two of Axiom’s current apprentices, Olivia Jones and Benjamin Jones, led by former apprentice and now head of Axiom’s apprenticeship programme, Alex Lewis.
Commenting on the event, Alex said: “Being part of the Civic Mission event with the Physics Mentoring Project has allowed us to engage with students that all have a particular interest in science and technology. The Axiom team were able to spread awareness of the vast engineering opportunities within PCBA manufacturing and explain how science is fundamental within our industry, ranging from electronic design and manufacture, through to end application functionality and performance.
“Axiom encouraged the students to get hands-on with some high complexity, mixed technology PCBA’s, where we explained how they are applied to many advanced electronic applications across various market sectors.
“Bringing along two current apprentices also allowed the students to gain advice from personal experiences during our Q&A session.
“We hope that sparking an interest within the younger generation could influence them to pursue a career within electronics, where one day, they will be seeking an apprenticeship or graduate opportunity within the industry”.
Celina Lavis, Project Manager for Physics Mentoring Project said: "Physics Mentoring are pleased to introduce our new branch known as Exploring Connections. This branch gives school students the chance to engage with local STEM employers and investigate alternative routes into Physics and STEM. It's important to give students the chance to work hands-on with excellent employers such as Axiom, so they can visualise a route to these opportunities in their local area".
